A tip from our very own agent, Justin Gesso, is to declutter your home. This will include clearing out your basement, storage rooms/closets and removing personal items. Most storage facilities offer special discounts for the first month you rent out a space. If the housing market is moving quickly, the average time to sell a home can be as quickly as one month, so you won’t be using a lot of money to use the space. You should also clean up the outside of your home because that is the first thing your buyers will see. Leaving toys, hoses, leaves, and weeds could negatively influence your buyers.

While it may seem like storage areas are a great place to store all your stuff. Storage areas can be a great selling point and the bigger and neater they look, the easier it will be to sell your house. It is also important to remove personal items from your home. You want people to look at your house, not pictures of you and your kids on the wall. You also want to avoid having large pieces of furniture in small rooms. Make sure the counters in the kitchen and baths are free of debris and almost all items. Avoid having any furniture in hallways and keep all walk ways wide and open.

Highlight key features when staging a home

Although decluttering is important, you shouldn’t completely clear out your home either. It is important to keep furniture and certain decorative items in your home. Use your existing furniture to your advantage by highlighting the key features of your home. These features could range from a large bay window, a fireplace, or an open living room. You can also use your furniture to downplay negative elements in your home. Investing in decorative towels, pillows and throws will create a cozy atmosphere and improve the visual context of certain rooms.

Make sure your house is always as clean as possible!

Last, but certainly not least is to clean your home. Clutter and dust is one of the first things potential buyers will notice. Be sure to deep clean and dust everything in your home. You never know how observant your buyers will be so cleaning everything before a showing will benefit you greatly. It may also help to have your carpets cleaned. If you have pets or children, there is a very good chance that there are spills in high traffic areas. Cleaning your carpets will get rid of those messes and create a fresh environment.
